Children are concrete thinkers, and therefore, when they encounter something they do not understand, they must make up a reason or story about it to file away so they can get out of the incident and keep moving on in life. As you grow into a teenager, adolescent, and then an adult, this story continues to grow with you, and you believe with everything in you that these things happened just the way your brain is telling you. These stories or pictures grow into beliefs which become belief systems, causing behaviors you do not always understand at a surface level. Your body reacts to what your mind, will, and emotions are telling you is truth.
Remember: your response is your responsibility. You are not responsible for the other person or their actions; they are.
In a ministry setting, we are able to ask the Lord to reveal truth and get to the root of a specific issue.
Quite often, what blooms with fruit in your adult life started as a tiny seed in your childhood. Partnering with the Lord will help to reveal where that seed took root. It can be a very innocent seed, or it can be something that was not supposed to happen.
A simplified example: If, when you were a baby, a dog that barked loudly while you were sleeping scared you so much that you cried, then all barking dogs can become dangerous in your child’s mind.
Circumstances continue to prove this fact to your mind, and as an adult, you really don’t care for dogs, or you even fear them.
In prayer ministry, we will ask the Lord to reveal the root of an issue through whichever means He knows you will understand. Getting to that root is the work of Holy Spirit.
It is not about blaming a parent, aunt, uncle, or anyone in authority or otherwise; it is what caused the initial reaction in you to be what it is and how to untangle it. It is not always a deep trauma, but it certainly can be.

Most people have a part of them that does not trust. They have a valid reason, even if that reason is no longer in their present, everyday lives. It began somewhere, and it is the opportunity for the person and the prayer minister or counselor to discover what happened and how the Lord will help you in it.
When the situation seems to happen again and again in different forms, it will cement the idea into your system that it is the truth. This is how structures and belief systems form in the human heart. This becomes a program for your system.
Just as computers are programmed with predictive text, so the human nervous system can become wired to react to situations that seem to follow a program. The enemy of your soul knows how this works and will present situations that seem to prove to your system just how dangerous this particular condition is. Walls begin to form in your heart, mind, will, and emotions to keep these threats away from you and keep you safe. Unfortunately, these walls can also keep out some of the great things in life.

Sometimes there are other people involved in the issue, but it is your response that is changeable, fixable, and your responsibility. The other person involved must be willing to do their own work. Even if they decide not to, are seemingly incapable, or are no longer alive, you can live and walk in freedom from negative reactions and heart-wounding through your willingness and availability to heal. You can choose to overcome it and change the programming. But it is your choice.
Remember: your response is your responsibility. You are not responsible for the other person or their actions; they are.
As you walk through this process, you will see changes and experience freedom in each area you choose to submit and open to the Lord. It seems impossible in some situations, and that is true, without the Lord it could be. But we know that with the Lord, ALL things are possible! (Mark 10:27, Matthew 19:26)
And that includes walking in freedom from even the most heinous occurrences in life.
He first loved you. He sent His Son, who died for you, and He continues to heal you day by day, incident by incident, season by season. He will never abandon or forsake you, but bring you close to Him to heal your hurts, and set your spirit, soul, and body free. Jesus died for your freedom. Allow Him to show you how to live free and freely live!
